This work is dedicated to the lives we have lost due to traffic deaths in our community. We mourn their loss and extend our greatest sympathies to everyone whom they loved. We are working to make our community safer in their memory, because we know they should still be with us today. While we cannot undo the tragedies that have occurred, we hope that we can honor them in protecting future cyclists in our city.

In the past year we have lost four community members on bike: Erick Munene Njue (30), David Winston Morris (61) , Merle Sheffield (63), and Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa (21). This project is for them.

City of Eugene goals and policies should have protected these individuals. Citywide Vision Zero implementation and goals to triple non-vehicle trips are in place to minimize cycling deaths. Current safety attempts are not enough and the alarming  number of deaths in just the past year call for further action. We cannot claim policy success if we continue to lose community members in everyday travel.

Transportation options should not be a life-or-death decision. Our community has felt the weight of these deaths, and we will utilize our grief, pain, and anger to inspire change.
